Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui Nomad

Season 23 24
Show
Nomad - Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui pieces together a mosaic drawn from the animate and inanimate elements of the desert. The dancers offer glimpses of the fluidity and adaptability of creatures that thrive in the harshest of conditions; the beautiful transience of sand dunes and winds; the intense physical and emotional thirst, the yearning for water and safety. And above all, the spirit of togetherness, of friendship and symbiosis, key to survival and evolution in an arid world that would be insurmountable alone.

Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is an indefatigable traveler, constantly capturing the movements of the world with his performers. Previously in Antwerp, he is now based in Geneva. Nomad is one of his most acclaimed recent works in which he aims to piece together “a mosaic of animate and inanimate elements from the desert.” To that end, the dance – fluid and technical – adapts to the circumstances, be it the wind, drought or sand. An image of the desert occupies the back of the stage, “a metaphor of ultimate freedom as well as the impossibility to survive.” From Cherkaoui’s imagination emerge various scenes over Felix Buxton’s score evocative of homeliness, friendship and symbiosis. No doubt dance has a lot to say about living and struggling together. Reacting to the manifestations of a world undermined by mankind, Cherkaoui offers the beauty of art in motion. Nomad carries this hope.
