Awarded the best immersive experience at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, The Man who couldn’t leave is a virtual reality medium-length film, a mesmerizing exploration of the prison world of 1950s Taiwan. In the old Green Island prison, the political prisoner A-Kuen tells about the persecutions that occurred at the time. Around his fellow inmates, frozen in time, he relates his own experience and that of his friend A-Ching, who didn’t survive. He is the “Man who couldn’t leave”, symbol of the treatment meted out for dissidents during the “White Terror” that swept the country immediately after the war and over several decades. With this film, which was put together from the numerous documents that chronicled the experiences of Green Island prisoners, filmmaker Singing Chen gives the audience a singular experience of time, place and wait, passing on their story and highlighting a chapter in the history of their country.
