Resulting from a special relationship between the Tours Centre Chorégraphique headed by Thomas Lebrun and the French overseas départements, this work brings together the Guyanese dancer Gladys Demba and the two dancers Jean-Hugues Miredin and Mickaël Top, from Martinique and Guadeloupe respectively. Although from different backgrounds and generations, they share common ground in generosity, hardship, enthusiasm and energy. Through the characters of the various carnivals, Thomas Lebrun builds a dance from their interwoven stories, which often echo those of slavery and the relationship with mainland France, moving back and forth between text, music and dance. That’s why on the day Vaval, King of the Carnaval, is buried, the She-Devil or the Mourner dragging her saucepans to collect the tears of the bereaved, the Fwet (a character adorned with whips), and a wonderful horned character get together to celebrate “a man, a woman, a human, a history of roots, colors both common and personal,” but above all freedom.
