Bringing together two creative kindred spirits, this program features Ici by Léro Lérus and The Look by Sharon Eyal, pieces exuding the virtuosity found in Ballet de L’Opéra national du Rhin.
The Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin under the direction of Bruno Bouché demonstrates its diverse agenda, which combines reinterpretations of classics, repertoire pieces, and adventurous new work. This double bill featuring Léro Lérus and Sharon Eyal is a case in point. These two met in the Batsheva Dance Company in 2005 and have continually interacted with each other through movement. Here Lérus’ work for 12 soloists of Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin highlights this connection. “I consider Ici as a kind of response to The Look. I want to reveal the “tribal” link that I feel in Sharon’s work and that I associate with specific cultural moments in Guadeloupe,” Lérus summarizes. A sunny work anchored in the present. Created in 2019 for The Young Ensemble – Batsheva’s junior company – The Look is conceptually based on a statement from Gandhi: “Nobody can hurt me without my permission.” Inspired by this mantra, Sharon Eyal creates a deeply undulating and sensual dance for 18 performers. Now helmed by Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin, The Look is an ode to resilience, an engaged trance for a more peaceful future.
