Mirlitons originated from a pulsing dialogue between François Chaignaud and Aymeric Hainaux. One is associate artist at Chaillot, théâtre national de la Danse and works in dance and song, intertwining baroque and medieval repertoire and urban dance. The other carves up the air with raw, immediate, no-frills vocal percussion. After ten years brainstorming the project, they created a space for communication and challenge, a ritual where sound and movement collide. Two masked bodies move forward in martial jingling steps, tracking down the history of movement. Their breaths collide, beatboxing turns into a pulse, a pounding, a vibration.
The beat is set by the striking heels on the floor and the breath that toys with the transformations made possible through technique. Tensions emerge, knots come together and apart as bodies get exhausted. With no effects on stage, the performers only indulge in the pure moment, holding a mic, a couple of bells, sometimes a harmonica. The poet/musician and the dancer/singer fall into an improvised duel, a dance in sounds, a song in movement.
