A high-caliber event where the art of William Forsythe meets the talented dancers of Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin. These three major pieces by the American choreographer – Quintett, Trio and Enemy in the Figure epitomize a lifelong journey in dance.
In the span of four decades, William Forsythe has redefined the canons of contemporary dance, reconstructing classical vocabulary – pointes included – while displaying a sharp sense of drama. Each of his works combines virtuosity and intelligence. Forsythe’s art is an unparalleled challenge to any dancer. Throughout this program, almost tailor-made to the performers of Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin, the lushness of the choreographer’s vocabulary stands out. Quintett (1993), a haunting and very personal piece by Forsythe, turns out to be a delicate exercise where the slightest movement evokes loss and the power of memory. Set to a poignant score by Gavin Bryars, Quintett is a deeply affecting piece. In a more playful vein, Trio (1996), is a rare piece of the choreographer’s that has the performers playing off contrasts and commonalities relentlessly. These children games seem as if transcended by Beethoven’s music. A magnificent piece. Finally, Enemy in the Figure (1989), a smash hit popular with major international troupes, utilizes shadows and speed in a corrugated wood set. Here Forsythe demonstrates his movement vocabulary, complete with tipped bodies, brisk jumps, and ultraprecise ensemble coordination. With music by longtime associate Thom Willems, Enemy in the Figure, for 11 dancers, connects the past to the present.
