Dorothée Munyaneza / Cie Kadidi Version(s)

When Dorothée Munyaneza met Christian Nka, a former boxer, educator, poet and icon of Marseille’s inner-city, the choreographer was struck by his history. Together with Chicago composer and musician Ben LaMar Gay, they’ve created a show where performance art meets installation and concert as they portray the legend while interrogating masculinity, the father figure, legacy and transmission.

Version(s) is a performance piece/installation/concert by choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza, who recently received the Salavisa European Dance Award. Two men meet. Two voices, two trajectories cross and interrogate each other. One the one hand, Christian Nka, an ex-boxer, educator and poet from Marseille’s inner-city, a figure of struggle, strength and bodily experience. On the other, Ben LaMar Gay, Chicago composer and musician, sound maker and longtime associate of the choreographer. Movement, music and speech engage in a dialogue. Version(s) portrays a man searching for meaning, exploring legacy and the transmission of values, what we receive and choose to be. “There are several versions of me,” says Christian Nka. He is accompanied by music that highlights body memory, challenged masculinity, violence and resilience. Looking out at the sea, he is boxing, dancing. Talking about his neighborhood, his fights, his silences. He explores fear, the desire for liberation, the burden of a history that shapes and transforms people.
