Andrés Marín & Ana Morales Matarife y Paraíso

Saison 25 26
Spectacle

Andrés Marín and Ana Morales, two major figures of the flamenco scene, draw from The Divine Comedy and the steps of Dante chasing Beatrice to create a show representing Paradise and Purgatory. The dance steps, the flamenco songs and the guitar notes blend and navigate through tradition and audacity, inspired by the sacred, folk, religious and pagan practices of Andalucian culture.

A risk-taker with a deeply personal style, Andrés Marín is a key figure of contemporary flamenco. The wonderful dancer and choreographer Ana Morales is known for her ability to translate to movement the different milestones of her “life path”. Together they created an unorthodox piece on an unexpected theme: paradise. But this is not the disembodied place of the Christian religion described by the poet Dante in The Divine Comedy. It is instead a place where land and sky merge and “the imperfect and ignorant voice of life resonates.” Matarife y Paraiso is about the “the desires that drive us in our quest for the ideal,” the illusions that result from them and the predicaments that they push us into. As to the faith evoked here, it is the faith sparked by dance and flamenco songs as they hurl their devotees into an endless quest for a constantly changing perfection. On stage, the two performers swap roles between sacrificer (matarife) and sacrified, each relinquishing their “tricks” and “vices” to find light and freedom. A distinguished trio of musicians, including singer and guitarist Antonio Campos, take this journey to a very human Eden.
